The Minister of Education, Shawn Edward, has issued a stern and clear warning in response to a recent series of student fights. Expressing his deep concern about the increasing violence following the reopening of schools, Minister Edward emphasized the necessity for young people to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts instead of engaging in physical altercations.
Although the specific details surrounding these altercations remain somewhat unknown, one incident in the northern part of the island resulted in a female student being hospitalized due to facial injuries.
The occurrences of student fights have caused significant concern within the education system, prompting Minister Edward to address the issue ahead of Tuesday’s parliamentary session. He described these incidents as regrettable and emphasized the importance of upholding a safe and suitable learning environment for all students.
“We continue to make school security a priority area of programming for us” Edward said. “I have sat with Chief Education Officer and other senior personnel in the Ministry as well as other stakeholders in education and we have adopted a serious tolerance approach to acts of indiscipline” he added.
The Minister also took a strong stance against the recording of incidents by students. He noted that individuals found recording will face severe penalties.
“Once we have the evidence, that you were a by-stander, recording a fight, with the intention of circulating that on social media amongst your friends, we will be extremly hard on those students” Edward said.
