Concerns about a local sugar shortage have recently been validated through an official release from the consumer affairs department. Consumers observed limited amounts of the sweetener on retail shelves, prompting serious worries about a potential shortage. A similar shortage had occurred in April of the previous year. In December 2023, responding to public concern, the Acting Director of the CAD had assured that the Government Warehouse had been adequately stocked with staple items, ensuring the widespread availability of this essential product across the island. However, in a recent statement, the department’s Director, Wendy Frederick, revealed that the country is indeed encountering challenges in procuring the commodity from suppliers. She mentioned that officials are currently making efforts to secure sugar from alternative sources.
“The Ministry of Commerce, Manufacturing, Business Development, Corporatives, and Consumer Affairs wishes to inform the general public that our suppliers of sugar have registered some difficulty in meeting our usual demand for the commodity. Unfavorable weather patterns lead to poor crop yield, and lower production quality, which resulted in general low stock levels of sugar within the region. We are currently in the process of securing shipments from alternative suppliers and are expecting a shipment as early as next week. Rest assured that measures are already being put in place to avoid any future shortages. Until then we are encouraging consumers, to carefully manage their personal stock”
