With over three hundred Saint Lucians having already received financial assistance in December of last year as part of the Government Income Support Programme, Minister for Equity, Honorable Joachim Henry indicated that applications for the program have now surpassed 5000. The program was launched with the intention to assist vulnerable families, which are struggling to recover in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Minister further implored vulnerable Saint Lucians to actively participate in the program.
“As of this morning, we have passed the five thousand plus, that have applied for income support. The total amount to benefit from the income support is four thousand nine hundred. I would like to encourage persons who have not applied to do so, because we need to assess persons and we ensure that all those who receive are qualified to receive” the Minister said.
The Minister identified specific vulnerable groups that may qualify for the program and stressed the concerted efforts of officials to adequately address and care for the needs of individuals within these groups.
“Persons from the informal sector and persons who didn’t benefit are the two most important criteria for qualifying. However, that may capture a number of persons. So, we look at other vulnerabilities and other deprivations, to ensure persons who are worst off. So, persons who have lost a love one during COVID, who also be a factor to be considered as well” he said.
The public is reminded that the deadline for submission of completed application forms for the ISP has been extended to January 31, 2024.
