The first-ever Caribbean Music Awards will take place on the night of August 31st and will showcase the music of the West Indies to a global audience. This event is set to recognize the achievements of the region’s best artists and producers over the past year. Hosted by Grammy Award winner, Wyclef Jean, the event is set to be held at the prestigious Kings Theatre in New York City. In a sit-down interview on NBC’s Today Show, the Haitian singer noted that the idea for the award ceremony was birthed during the COVID-19 lockdown period.
“Swiss Beats and Timberlands had created a platform called versus and then one of the things that we noticed is Bounty Killer and Beanie Man’s performance….it shut down the internet and it reminded us how much we loved the Caribbean” he said. “We need everybody to tune in with that same energy” the singer added.
Among those to be honoured at the event is Soca sensation Machel Mantano. The Trinidadian is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for his services to music.
Also set to be highlighted is reggae icon Buju Banton. The singer is set to get a Humanitarian Award. The award recognizes individuals who actively participate in their community, display modesty, compassion, and a dedication to helping others progress. Buju is receiving the award for their altruistic impact on society.
Saint Lucian Teddyson John also expected to perform at the event, with several other regional stars.
Fans from all around the world are encouraged to view this spectacle, as Caribbean excellence is showcased.
