Crusita Descartes Pelius has been reinstated as the Commissioner of Police for the RSLPF for a one-year term. Mrs. Pelius, who had a 30-year career in law enforcement, was the first woman ever appointed to lead the island’s security forces.
According to Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre , Pelius was recalled in order to lead the police force on a one year contract. He added that there is optimism that she will address critical issues within the police force. This includes implementing a training program aimed at enhancing leadership skills among senior officers.
“I’m very pleased that Ms. Pelius has accepted to be the new commissioner of police” Pierre said. “We have a core of young officers that are very capable, but we needed some time, so they can get the necessary training and experience” he added.
Some observers have questioned whether or not the change was a tactical one to divert attention from the RSLPFs on-going sexual harassment scandal. Former Acting Commissioner Ronald Philip had numerous accusations levelled against him, during his tenure and has been a major talking in the court of public opinion. Despite of these accusations, Prime Minister noted that Philip did a “sterling” job while in office and believes that his record speaks for itself.
It is yet to be seen what the impact of this latest change in the police force will be.
