Comments by Rayneau Gajadhar, CEO of RG Group of Companies, on a local talk show have sparked controversy. Gajadhar claimed that there are “no poor people” in the country, a statement criticized by some social media users who cite socio-economic challenges as major contributors to poverty. With issues like unemployment affecting policymakers and citizens alike, some have questioned Gajadhar’s remarks. However, in an attempt to clarify, Gajadhar highlighted what he sees as a lackadaisical work ethic among citizens, suggesting that a reluctance to learn has caused Saint Lucians to miss out on opportunities.
“Do you know there’s a major problem in getting workers in St Lucia? Just workers that even want to learn. You get workers who want to get paid. They don’t want to learn. Why are you telling me there are poor people when there’s so much opportunity in St Lucia?” he said.
Gajadhar persisted in expressing his concerns about what he sees as a lack of drive among the population. He specifically condemned a tendency to rely too heavily on state officials. Furthermore, he called on government officials to follow the example of certain foreign countries that prioritize self-sufficiency.
“Government has some programs and even under those programs I don’t see anything much happening. Because we are not driven to do better for ourselves… The governments do not drive and force people to become better for themselves, however, in China, in Russia, in India, you are almost forced to be better and do better for yourself” he argued.
