The controversy over the demolition of Custody Suites remains a prominent issue into the new year. The United Workers Party’s decision to demolish the building in 2020 has been labeled a costly mistake by the Saint Lucia Labour Party, both during their time in opposition and in government. Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, during the first pre-Cabinet press briefing of 2024, criticized the act as callous and reckless. He highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement officers due to the lack of facilities for arrested individuals, forcing them to take detainees for so-called “limes.”
In response, the UWP questioned why Prime Minister Pierre, who also serves as the Minister for National Security, did not take action if he was “aware that security assets of the state are compromised”. Pierre defended himself, asserting his commitment to truth-telling regardless of circumstances.
“I’ve always taken a pledge to speak the truth to the people of Saint Lucia, even though the truth is very uncomfortable” he said. “I know it’s was very uncomfortable for the UWP to understand that they destroyed a holding facility, with out making adequate arrangements for housing people who were arrested” he added.
The Prime Minister further noted that he expects the Opposition to be ashamed of what he deems is a mismanagement of country’s assets. He noted that the decision to demolish Custody Suites was a “short-sighted” one.
